Metal Madness

A monster metal project by genius Cal Scott (ex-Disincarnate), this is probably the single most dark, twisted metal vision terrorizing the inetrent right now. It is a bizarre and original mix of death metal, thrash, industrial and gothic elements to emerge at something that is indeed way more than the sum of its parts. This is sick, original metal for those unafraid to venture into the deepest undergound recesses of metal.

What is surprising is that while this is aeons ahead of what passes as metal these days, Cal has chosen to make this a non-commercial entity, thus championing the cause of free music. Umbah's entire discography is available for download from his site. Start from the latest slab of madness, Trilobeth and work your way backwards. Grimlock Saris, Alien Beauty, Canvas, Obliticus and Octopi are all mandatory listening for anyone claioming to be remotely into innovative extreme metal. There are many others available as well. All are DIY yet have killer production and guitar chops from hell, along with a whole myriad of vocal textures and strange unearthly ambience.

NEBEL

This has to be one of the most underated extreme metal projects out there. A fast and furious amalgamation of black/death/grind with industrial metal that is focused in a single minded artistic vision. We are all still awating the fabled new album. He calls all of them demos, but they are better than most major black metal albums. If you like something that can be clear, brutal and cult at the same time, venture into the region of Nebel.

carrier flux

Here is another warrior at the frontier of metal, producing a sound that is between worlds, both sonically and thematically. Carrier Flux is the melding of black metal and gothic/industrial to highly melodic yet darkly devastating effect. His second album, 2002's In Waste is available in its entirety (as a zip file containing high quality mp3) and you should get it before it is taken off (as happened with his debut). What are you waiting for ? !

Hypnosis is whirlwind of a death metal band. They combine the brutality of catchy modern death metal with some killer melodic (non-gothenburg) and industrial elements for a winning mix. Once in while a band comes along that challengees everything extreme metal can be, yet remain ignored by the masses. Combine the blitzkreig of technical death metal ala Mithras, the atmospherics of black/dark metal and the conceptual zaniness of Hevy Devy and you have metal madness aka Disciples of Zoldon. Why this isnt as huge as hell is beyond me.  Dimaension X is out there ! This guy is a musical genious who embraces a dozen influences and comes out with winning mix after mix of all of them. They are all instrumental albums but with music this grand and ambitious, who needs vocals. When people hear the term 'instrumental' in metal, it usually conjures up inages of post-rock mediocrity or shredder wankomania. This is neither and is infact much closer to an instrumnetal Bal-Sagoth jamming out with Frank Zappa. There are at least 7 albums available for download (there might be more). Hear this and fear for the future !

There are very few bands who can claim to striding forward with black metal. One of the handful is Dis, who is a black metal madman, who approaches this most hackneyed of genres with a diffrent approach : to produce forward thinking progressive and brutal black metal with crystalline production, and amazing chops (not to mention free distribution). Dis's work is a contendor for the throne left by likes of Emperor. All 4 albums plus the EP are amazing from beginning to end. The lyrical concepts are quite original also, and the overall atmopshere is that of a slaughterhouse for all that today's kiddies call kvlt and trve. Imagine Ripping Corpse jamming to Emperor. Though undoubtedly miles apart from the slash'n'burn / gloom'n'doom / seek'n'destroy projects above, this is neverthless still edgy enough to qualify as industrial metal. It is a fun (remember 'fun' ?) danceable and witty project from three crazy guys (also a change from the above one man armies). Bizarrely, the input of 3 individuals results in a more open, sparser sound (again a change from the wall-of-obliteration productions above) where every note ,sample and loop is used to maximum effect. I know I would rather dance to this rather than some euro-techno or trance crap anyday. Funky, funny yet still lisghly bizarre and bitter in places, look further for your next rock dance party albums.

Another bunch of unsung heroes, who have faced a number of hardships in their existence, while producing some of the best classic progressive doom metal you will ever hear. The band is constantly evolving, but each phase of the band's sound remains and essential listen. From the crushing melancholic heaviness of The Fate of Angels to the progressive melodic textures of Two Way Mirror , this is a recommended listen for those into more morose metal. A very original sound, yet saluting the classics !

An absolutely crushing behemoth of industrial death metal, the band (essentially now a one -man project) from Finnland slays like few others. Having ben around since 2000, originally monickered Sound Ogre, all 5 releases featured on the site are a pleasure to behold. Textured dark and extreme metal, that manages to sound cyber/futuristic, esoteric and aplocalyptic at the same time, Voretch has developed a signature sound that hits on many levels. While people shelve out dough for watered down mediocre industry sanctioned "musical" product, here is a real metal artist, offering extremely high quality albums for free. What the hell are you waiting for !
